He was the first to calculate the amount of energy that Earth receives from the Sun and the proportion absorbed by the atmosphere. He was also the first to explain clearly how birds soar without flapping their wings. He calculated that wings of a certain shape would deliver lift and in 1896 he built a pilotless, steam-powered aircraft that flew for 1281 m.
