The segregation of land use into different areas for each type of use: agricultural, industrial, recreational, and residential. Planners have sought to pursue sustainable development using more mixed land use zoning in order to reduce the demand for travel, and greater coordination between transport and land use planning, including support for public transport (Haughton and Counsell (2004) Geog. J. 170, 2). See Greed (2006) Tijdschrift 97, 3 on the problems for women in cities divided by traditional land use zoning, and Degg and Chester (2005) Geog. J. 171, 2 on land use zoning in the mitigation of seismic/volcanic hazards.
