Lamb shift

A small energy difference between two levels (²S_1/2 and ²P_1/2) in the hydrogen spectrum. The shift results from the quantum interaction between the atomic electron and the electromagnetic radiation. It was first discovered by the US physicist Willis Eugene Lamb (1913–2008). It was calculated and explained using renormalization in quantum electrodynamics by the US physicists Richard Feynman and Julian Seymour Schwinger (1918–94) and the Japanese physicist Sinitiro Tomonaga (1906–79).
