单词 Lamb shift
释义
Lamb shift

Physics
  • A small energy difference between two levels (2S1/2 and 2P1/2) in the hydrogen spectrum. The shift results from the quantum interaction between the atomic electron and the electromagnetic radiation. It was first discovered by the US physicist Willis Eugene Lamb (1913–2008). It was calculated and explained using renormalization in quantum electrodynamics by the US physicists Richard Feynman and Julian Seymour Schwinger (1918–94) and the Japanese physicist Sinitiro Tomonaga (1906–79).

Chemistry
  • A small energy difference between two energy levels of an atom, which the Dirac equation predicts should be degenerate. The existence of the Lamb shift was conclusively demonstrated by Willis Eugene Lamb in 1947, in the case of 2S½ and 2P½ levels in the hydrogen spectrum. The shift occurs because of interactions between atomic electrons and the electromagnetic field, which can be calculated very accurately using quantum electrodynamics.
