A $10 million prize offered in 1996 to the first team to build and launch a spacecraft capable of taking three people to 100 km altitude and repeat the feat within a fortnight, before 1 January 2005. The offer was made by the privately funded X Prize Foundation of St Louis, Missouri. In May 2004, the prize was renamed the Ansari X Prize following a donation from entrepreneurs Anousheh and Amir Ansari. Two dozen teams from seven countries registered for the competition which was won on 4 October 2004 by Mojave Aerospace Ventures of Mojave, California, with SpaceShipOne.
