Major scientific instrument on the Cassini spacecraft that measures the infrared energy of objects in the Saturnian system (atmospheres, surfaces, or ring particles), primarily to determine their temperature and composition. The 50-cm telescope was a joint mission between NASA and the European Space Agency.
Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) aboard NASA’s Cassini spacecraft made this temperature map of Saturn’s moon Mimas. The CIRS data show an unexpected and bizarre pattern of daytime temperatures found on thid small inner moon.
