A series of Canadian communications satellites that had served Canadian satellite needs for over 20 years. With the launch of the first Anik satellite in 1972, Canada became the first country in the world to have a satellite in geostationary orbit for the purpose of domestic communications. Fifteen additional Anik satellites have been launched, the last being Anik-G1 in 2003. Five of the satellites (launched between 2000 and 2003) are still in use.
