A nationalist organization formed in South West Africa (Namibia) in 1964–66 as the South African government extended formal authority in the region. Driven from the country, SWAPO, under the presidency of Sam Nujoma, began a guerrilla campaign, operating largely from neighbouring Angola. Efforts by the United Nations failed to find an agreeable formula for Namibian independence and the guerrilla war continued until 1988. SWAPO won the first general election in November 1989. In the first post-independence elections in Namibia, in 1994, SWAPO secured a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. It achieved similar results in 1999, 2004, and 2009.
