A phase transition in which the difference between two phases is characterized by a change in topology rather than a change in symmetry. This type of phase transition was analysed by Michael Kosterlitz (1943– ) and David Thouless (1934–2019) in 1972–73, in the context of certain two-dimensional systems; their research built on slightly earlier work by Vadim Berezinskii (1935–80).
