Born in Syzran in the Kuibyshev region of Russia, Kornienko spent time in the military and as a commercial engineer before working as an engineer in 1998 at the Energia Rocket/Space Corporation; a year later he qualified as a test cosmonaut. In 2010 Korienko completed his first space flight as a Soyuz-18 and ISS-23 flight engineer, performing a space walk that lasted for 6 hours and 43 minutes. During his stay, Kornienko has logged 176 days, 1 hour, and 18 minutes in space. Kornienko blasted off for the ISS once again in March 2015 aboard a Soyuz spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where he joined Kelly for their historic year in space to study the effects of this harsh environment on the human body and to help advance deep space exploration on piloted missions to Mars.
