A method for recording, transmitting, and reproducing sound in three dimensions. The pressure and velocity components of the input sound are recorded from all directions. From this recording, the audio can be reproduced by one channel (monophonic) or two channels (stereophonic), or it can be reproduced in a multichannel format to recreate a full two-dimensional listening experience as either horizontal surround sound or vertical surround sound. It can also be produced in a full three-dimensional listening experience as periphonic surround sound. The number of loudspeakers employed in ambisonic sound reproduction is dependent on the number of dimensions required in the reproduced sound and its accuracy. These loudspeakers are evenly spaced, ideally spherically, around the listening area, and it is likely in a live performance that at least 16 speakers would be used.
