A positively charged particle emitted by various radioactive materials such as uranium during radioactive decay. The particle consists of two neutrons and two protons, and is therefore identical to the nucleus of a helium atom. The result of this radioactive decay is that the original element is gradually converted into another element with a decreased atomic number and mass. Alpha particle emissions, or alpha decay may occur at the same time as beta decay. It can be stopped by a sheet of paper and is harmful to humans only if the substance emitting the alpha particles is ingested, inhaled, or enters the body through wounds.
