Suppose that an arc of a plane curve is rotated through one revolution about a line in the plane that does not cut the arc (except possibly at the arc’s ends). The surface of the 3-dimensional figure obtained is a surface of revolution. Cylinders, cones, spheres and spheroids, catenoids, tori and hyperboloids of one sheet and hyperboloids of two sheets can all be generated as surfaces of revolution. See also area of a surface of revolution.
