A set of relatively stable elements with atomic numbers around 114 and mass numbers of about 298 predicted to exist beyond the transuranic elements. In spite of the difficulties of synthesizing such elements, all the elements up to 118 have been reported. The existence of supertransuranic elements is postulated because of the stability associated with the closing of a proton or neutron shell (see shell model) that occurs for magic numbers. The number 114 is predicted to be a proton magic number, and the number 184 is predicted to be a neutron magic number.
