单词 Kirchhoff, Gustav Robert (1824–87)
释义
Kirchhoff, Gustav Robert (1824–87)

Physics
  • who in 1850 became a professor at Breslau and four years later joined Robert Bunsen at Heidelberg. In 1845, while still a student, he formulated Kirchhoff’s laws concerning electric circuits. With Bunsen he worked on spectroscopy, a technique that led them to discover the elements caesium (1860) and rubidium (1861).

Astronomy
  • With the chemist Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (1811–99) he established the principles of spectral analysis. In 1859 he reasoned that the Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectrum indicated that light from the photosphere was being absorbed at those wavelengths by the Sun’s atmosphere. Furthermore, he realized that the Fraunhofer D lines were produced by sodium in the Sun’s atmosphere, and other Fraunhofer lines would therefore reveal which other elements were present in the Sun. From then on, astronomical spectroscopy developed rapidly in the hands of others such as P. A. Secchi in Italy and W. Huggins in England.

Chemical Engineering
  • A German physicist who founded the science of spectroscopy. He discovered the laws that govern the absorption and emission of radiation and the flow of electricity in electrical networks. In 1859 he presented the law that states that the ratio of the emission and absorption powers of all materials is the same at a given temperature and a given wavelength of radiation produced. He went on to derive the concept of a perfect black body that can absorb and emit radiation at all wavelengths.
