He studied mathematics at Cambridge U, graduating in 1927. In 1928 he joined the faculty of the LSE where he spent his entire career and was appointed Professor of Statistics in 1944. He was President of the Econometric Society in 1951 and of the RSS in 1969, being awarded the latter's Guy Medal in Gold in 1978. He was knighted in 1966.
