who studied philosophy at Oxford and experimental psychology at Freiburg. He was professor of philosophy at Manchester from 1893 to 1924. His main philosophical work was the two-volume Space, Time, and Deity (1920). Although a realist who held that we had knowledge of a mind-independent world, Alexander nevertheless held an evolutionary picture of the world as moving towards an unrealized ideal or deity, a view more typical of the rival absolute idealism.
