Grand Duke of Vladimir (1252–63). Born in Vladimir, son of the Grand Duke Jaroslav II of Novgorod, he acquired his second name after his defeat of the Swedish army on the banks of the River Neva in 1240. Wars against the Germans and Lithuanians culminated in a battle with the Teutonic Knights on the frozen Lake Peipus which he won decisively. After his death he was canonized as a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
