单词 Kanaka
释义
Kanaka

World History
  • A native Hawaiian, or more generally any Pacific Islander. Kanakas, mainly from the New Hebrides and the Solomon Islands, were brought to Australia between 1863 and 1904 as cheap labour. Theoretically, they voluntarily entered contracts for fixed terms. In practice, they were subjected to kidnap, slavery, and murder. Their entry to Australia was banned in 1904. Most of those in Australia were deported back to the islands from 1906 onwards, as part of the White Australia Policy.
