Kalman, a graduate of MIT (BSc, 1953; MSc, 1954) gained his DSci from Columbia U (1957). In papers published in 1960 and 1961 he introduced what is now termed the Kalman filter. At that time he was at the Research Institute for Advanced Study in Baltimore. He was appointed Professor of Engineering Mathematics at Stanford U in 1964, moving to U Florida in 1971 as Professor of System Theory. He was an elected member of NAS, NAE, and AAAS. He was awarded the 2008 National Medal of Science.
