The Ottoman Empire reached its fullest extent under his rule; his conquests included Belgrade (1521), Rhodes (1522), and Tripoli (1551), in addition to those in Iraq (1534) and Hungary (1562). This and the cultural achievements of the time earned him the nickname in Europe of ‘Suleiman the Magnificent’. He was also a noted administrator, known to his subjects as ‘Suleiman the Lawgiver’.
