单词 X-ray spectroscopy
释义
X-ray spectroscopy

Physics
  • The study of the atomic spectra that are generated when an inner electron is ejected from an atom; the hole created in this way is filled by an outer electron of the atom, and an X-ray photon is emitted as a result. X-ray spectroscopy is a useful technique for examining materials because the X-rays created in this way are specific to each element.

Chemistry
  • A type of spectroscopy in which the emission or absorption of X-rays from or by matter is studied. X-ray spectroscopy is concerned with transitions between energy levels involving the inner electrons of atoms and featured prominently in the development of the old quantum theory. Henry Moseley used X-ray spectroscopy to derive Moseley’s law and hence showed that atomic number is the quantity that characterizes a chemical element. This led to the discovery of hafnium and rhenium—spectacular examples of how X-ray spectroscopy can be used in chemical analysis.
