whose career has been spent in the USA. He is known for his work on wavelets. Johnstone's first degrees were from the ANU, where he obtained his MSc in probability and statistics in 1978. He obtained his PhD from Cornell U in 1981, and joined the faculty of Stanford U. In 1995 he was awarded the Guy Medal in Bronze of the RSS and was the COPSS President's Award winner. He was President of the IMS in 2001 and its Wald Lecturer in 2004.
