A stream that follows a line of geologic weakness, such as the outcrop of a soft bed, a sequence of major joints, a fault trace, or the axis of an anticline. Such a stream tends to extend headwards actively, and may acquire further tributaries through the process of river capture. It is called a ‘strike stream’ when its trace follows that geologic strike, and the associated valley is called a ‘strike valley’.
