A NASA satellite launched in 1998 December to study regions of star formation. It carried an elliptical radio telescope 0.55 × 0.71 m which collected submillimetre waves emitted by water, oxygen, carbon, and carbon monoxide in molecular clouds. SWAS ceased operations in 2005.
