A radio interferometer jointly owned by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics of Taiwan, situated at an altitude of 4080 m on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. It consists of eight dishes each of 6 m aperture, arranged in an approximately triangular shape with baselines up to 509 m. The SMA was opened in 2003 and operates at wavelengths of 0.4 to 1.7 mm (700–180 GHz).
