A type of plug-and-socket connector used when rapid and easy connections between circuits or devices are required. Insertion or removal of the plug can cause one or more switching functions to occur, such as the breaking of a short circuit. The basic construction is shown in the diagram. The plug slides into the sprung socket and is correctly located by means of a groove running round the plug. The contacts are arranged linearly along the length of the plug and socket and are insulated from each other. Two or more contacts may be used. The end of the plug forms one contact and the others are rings lying along the length of the metal casing. Contact is made by means of a central wire or conducting rod. More than one rod can be used if more than two contacts are required, the rods being insulated from the casing and from each other except at the connection point.
