A preference or desire that is shaped by a particular social circumstance making it expedient to have that preference rather than another. When there are asymmetries of power, it can be expedient for the less powerful to adapt their tastes and desires to become those that the more powerful would wish them to have. A goal of liberation movements is often to make people aware of this dynamic.
