25143 Itokawa is an asteroid made from rubble, named for the Japanese aerospace engineer Hideo Itokawa (1912–99). The asteroid was discovered on 26 September 1998, and in 2005 the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa (‘peregrine falcon’) touched down on it twice, collecting samples that it delivered to Earth on 13 June 2010. These were the first samples ever captured and returned from an asteroid.
