单词 isotropy
释义
isotropy

Astronomy
  • A characteristic of a substance or body in which physical properties are the same in all directions, such as the cosmic microwave background and the very large-scale distribution of matter throughout the Universe. An object such as a star that emits radiation equally in all directions is known as an isotropic radiator. An ideal antenna that is equally sensitive in all directions is known as an isotropic antenna. See also Anisotropy.

Statistics
  • If a time series would have the same basic properties were time to run backwards, then it displays isotropy and is said to be isotropic. Similarly, if the properties of a spatial process are the same in all directions then it is isotropic. However, if, for example, the spatial autocorrelation is different in the north–south direction and the east–west direction, then it displays anisotropy and is said to be anisotropic.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • The uniformity of physical characteristics of a medium irrespective of the direction in which they are measured. Compare anisotropy; inhomogeneity.
