单词 complementarity
释义
complementarity

Physics
  • The concept that a single model may not be adequate to explain all the observations made of atomic or subatomic systems in different experiments. For example, electron diffraction is best explained by assuming that the electron is a wave (see de broglie wavelength), whereas the photoelectric effect is described by assuming that it is a particle. The idea of two different but complementary concepts to treat quantum phenomena was first put forward by the Danish physicist Niels Bohr in 1927. See also light.

Chemistry
  • The concept that a single model may not be adequate to explain all the observations made of atomic or subatomic systems in different experiments. For example, electrons behave as particles in some experiments, but in other experiments, such as electron diffraction, they behave as waves. The idea of two different but complementary concepts to treat quantum phenomena was first put forward by the Danish physicist Niels Bohr (1855–1962) in 1927.

Geography
  • A mutual dependency based on an ability to produce goods in one area which are needed in another, as with the import of Japanese manufactured goods to Australia, and the export of Australian agricultural goods to Japan (D. Rumley 1999). Nazara et al. (2006) J. Geog. Sys. 8, 3 explore the degree to which complementarity and competitive interaction at one level in the hierarchy persist at lower or higher levels.

Economics
  • A relation between two goods or services in which a rise in the price of one decreases demand for the other, because these goods are often purchased and/or used together, e.g. car tyres and petrol. See also substitute.
