Orders in quantum-mechanical systems that can have more than one type of order, as they are capable of being characterized by either symmetry or topology. Which order prevails depends on the parameters governing the system. Competing orders occur in condensed matter, including strongly correlated systems consisting of ultracold atoms. The phase diagram of a system with competing orders can be very complex. It has been suggested that competing orders are important in high-temperature superconductivity.
