A monkey belonging to the genus Salmiri (family Cebidae) that has short, olive fur, orange on its back and lower limbs and black on the shoulders, and a black and white face. Squirrel monkeys use their long tail as a tool and for balance, but not for climbing. They are arboreal and active by day, living in groups of up to 500, and feed mainly on fruit and insects. There are seven species, found in the forests of tropical Central and South America.
