The classification theorem of simple groups includes certain denumerable families: the cyclic groups of prime order, the alternating groups (from A₅ onwards), and families of ‘Lie type’. Beyond these families, there are 26 exceptional or “sporadic” simple groups; the search for a comprehensive list of such groups was a significant research effort for algebraists in the 1960s and 1970s.
