Chemical Engineering

The extent to which an irregularly shaped or non-spherical particle equates to being spherical. It is independent of particle size and defined as the ratio of the surface area of a particle to its actual surface area:
$Φ = \frac{6 v_{p}}{d_{p} s_{p}}$

where d_p is the equivalent or nominal particle diameter, v_p is the volume of a particle, and s_p is its surface area. For a spherical particle, Φ = 1. Tables of sphericity are used for particles of various defined geometric shapes.

Geology and Earth Sciences

An expression of how closely the shape of a grain resembles the shape of a sphere. Sphericity can be determined by examining the relation between the long (L), intermediate (I), and short (S) axes of the particle, the maximum projection sphericity, Ψ‎, being given by the expression Ψ‎ = ³√(S²/LI). For a perfect sphere, Ψ‎ = 1. Values less than one relate to increasingly less spherical shapes. See also particle shape; roundness index.
