specializing in bioinformatics who divides his time between Australia and the USA. Speed obtained his BSc at U Melbourne in 1965 and joined the faculty at Monash U where he gained his PhD in 1969. After spells at U Sheffield (1969–73) and U Western Australia (1974–82), he was chief of the CSIRO Division of Mathematics & Statistics (1983–87). In 1987 he was appointed Professor at UCB and since 1997 has divided his time between UCB and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. He was President of the IMS in 2004 having been its Rietz Lecturer in 1991 and its Wald Lecturer in 2001. He was awarded the Pitman Medal (see Pitman) of the SSAI in 2004 and was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 2006.
