who introduced the use of statistical methods into psychology. Spearman’s initial choice of career was the army. He fought with distinction in the Burmese War and did not leave the army until 1897, when he went to Leipzig to study psychology, obtaining his PhD in 1904. His first two papers, introducing Spearman’s rho and laying the foundations for factor analysis, appeared in that year. After posts in various German universities he returned to London in 1907 as Professor of Psychology at UCL. Spearman was elected FRS in 1924 and to the NAS in 1943.
