A task force assembled by NASA in its first week of existence. It was set up to develop the Mercury spacecraft project. The task group at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, consisted of 35 engineers. Specifications for the Mercury spacecraft were drawn up in November 1958 and NASA announced the project on 17 December (the US aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first flight on the same date in 1903). By 1961, the STG had some 750 employees, and it was transferred to Houston, Texas, as the Manned Spacecraft Center, which later became the Johnson Space Center.
