An ultrasonic technique used to disrupt the cell wall and membrane of microorganisms and release the intracellular material. The ultrasonic energy causes areas of compression and rarefaction in which cavities form, resulting in violent collapse and shock waves that are believed to be the cause of the cellular damage. Being a small-scale technique, it is largely confined to use in laboratories.
