Shortened title of the New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars compiled by J. L. E. Dreyer and published in 1888. It contained 7840 galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters, the majority of them discovered by F. W. Herschel and J. F. W. Herschel. In fact, Dreyer’s work was a revised and enlarged successor to J. F. W. Herschel’s General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (1864). Additional objects were listed in two Index Catalogues. Objects were listed in order of right ascension with a brief description of their appearance. The objects in Dreyer’s catalogues are still known by their NGC or IC numbers.
