North Korean ballistic missile and satellite launch site near the country’s northwestern border with China in North Pyongan Province. Construction began in 2001 and was apparently completed by 2011. It was first used in April 2012 to launch an Unha-3 rocket, which failed after reaching an altitude of only 151 km. A second satellite launch attempt was made in December 2012 and succeeded in placing a Kwangmyŏngsŏng-3 Unit 2 satellite into orbit.
