A hydroelectricity and irrigation complex in south-east Australia that consists of sixteen major dams, seven power stations, a pumping station, and 225 km of tunnels, pipelines, and aqueducts constructed between 1949 and 1974. This is the largest engineering project ever undertaken in Australia. The water of the Snowy River is captured at a high elevation and diverted inland to the Murray River and Murrumbidgee River through the scheme.
