Snedecor received a BS in mathematics and physics from U Alabama in 1905 and an AM in physics from U Michigan in 1913. In that year he was one of the first faculty to join the Mathematics Department at Iowa State College and one of his first courses was on statistics. He spent his entire career at Iowa, and the Department now occupies a building named in his honour. His first graduate student, in 1931, was Gertrude Cox. His Statistical Methods Applied to Experiments in Agriculture and Biology, co-authored with Cochran, sold more than 125 000 copies. He was the 1970 winner of the Wilks Award of the ASA and was made an Honorary Life Member of the IBS in 1971.
