who in 1958 became a professor of astronomy at Cambridge University. He is best known for his proposal in 1948, with Sir Hermann Bondi (1919–2005) and Thomas Gold (1920– 2004), of the steady-state theory of the universe. He also carried out very significant theoretical work on the formation of elements in stars.
