A strip of land, bounded by parallel faults, that has been uplifted between them, the opposite movement to that in graben. Examples of horsts occur in the Ceraunius Fossae on Mars.
Geology and Earth Sciences
Upthrown block lying between two steep-angled fault blocks. Comparegraben. See alsorift.
Geography
A block of high ground which stands out because it is flanked by normal faults on each side. See Walsh and Schultz-Ela (2003) GSA Bull. 115, 3. It may be that the block has been elevated or that the land on either side of the horst has sunk.
