Any member of the primate family Hominidae, which includes humans and their fossil ancestors in the tribe Hominini. The hominid family is now regarded as also including the other extant great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utan—formerly constituting the family Pongidae) and extinct groups, such as Australopithecus and Dryopithecus.
