A joint US–French–Japanese satellite to detect gamma-ray bursts, launched in 2000 October. The satellite carries three instruments: a set of wide-field gamma-ray spectrometers (FREGATE); a wide-field X-ray monitor (WXM); and a set of soft X-ray cameras (SXC). These search for gamma-ray bursts, establish their location and alert observers on Earth. HETE-1 was a launch failure. The mission ended in 2008 March.
