A layer whose presence remains undetected by seismic refraction methods because (a) it is too thin and has insufficient velocity contrast to provide a discernible arrival; or (b) it is of lower velocity than the overlying medium. The term is analogous to the suppressed layer in the interpretation of electrical resistivity soundings.
