who specialized in applications of quasi-likelihood. A graduate of U Sydney, Heyde obtained his PhD at ANU (in 1965, supervised by Moran), joining the ANU faculty in 1968. After spells at the CSIRO and U Melbourne, Heyde rejoined ANU, dividing his time between ANU and Columbia U, where he was Director of the Center for Applied Probability. He was President of the SSAI from 1979 to 1981, and was awarded the Society's Pitman Medal (see Pitman) in 1988, and the Hannan Medal of the AAS in 1994. He was President of the BSMSP for 1985–7.
