Reaching the rank of rear admiral, he was a naval pilot and test pilot, who made the first US manned space flight in 1961, in a Mercury spacecraft. In 1971 Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 lunar mission, piloting the Antares lander and becoming the fifth person to walk on the Moon.
