The English poet is also an important figure in the history of British radicalism and atheism. Eton succeded in instilling in him a strong hatred of tyranny and authority, while his The Necessity of Atheism (1811) written together with Thomas Jefferson Hogg resulted in his being expelled from University College, Oxford. Shelley’s poetry is a poetry of ideas: Queen Mab: A Philosophical Poem (1813) extols the philosophy of William Godwin, including republicanism, vegetarianism, atheism and free love. He also shared the German Romantic idealist vision of a spirit of the age moving humanity and history with it.
